Practical Help
A house with a garden. A budget for a trainer. A support network nearby. Most of us do not have all of those. This one is for everyone who does not.
Most separation anxiety advice assumes a certain set of circumstances. A flexible schedule. Money for a trainer. A support network of friends or family who can help. Not everyone has those things. This read is for everyone who does not.
Professional help is genuinely valuable but it is not accessible for everyone. Free and lower-cost alternatives that are actually worth your time include online communities where experienced owners share what worked, books by certified separation anxiety trainers, YouTube content from qualified behaviourists, and some vets who can advise on whether there are options to help as a bridge while you work on the behaviour.
And honestly? This community exists partly for this reason. Connecting with people in the same situation costs nothing and can be more valuable than a single expensive consultation.
This is one of the hardest versions of this situation, especially if you are in a new city or country with no family or close friends to lean on. Some things that have helped others: local dog owner Facebook groups where you might find people willing to do dog sitting swaps, online communities where you get the emotional support even if not the practical kind, and being honest with your employer about your situation since remote and hybrid arrangements have become more normalised.
One of the most underused solutions is connecting with other owners in similar situations. Someone who has an anxious dog understands your dog better than a random sitter ever could. They are not doing it for the money. They are doing it because they get it. And you can do the same for them. This kind of community support is something we are actively working to make easier through this platform.
Without resources, this is harder. That is just true and it deserves to be said plainly. But harder does not mean impossible. And you should never feel like your dog's anxiety is your fault because you do not have access to expensive solutions. You are doing the best you can with what you have. That counts for something.
